My lessons focus on drumming fundamentals including rudiments, stick movement and control techniques, reading, and developing the muscle memory to play with confidence and consistency. I have an extensive background in the Alexander Technique (M.AmSAT), which I apply as a framework in all my lessons. This may include examining how we use our bodies to produce sound, calming our nervous system, and learning how to respond more effectively to stimuli.
Lessons cover:
- Warm-Ups and Snare work including stick control, rudiments, and reading.
- Drum set work including auditions or school prep work, learning new rhythms, and applying concepts to the set within musical form.
- Drum set play along tracks, charting student choice songs, composition and improvisation.
Technique and Body Movement connections
I first discovered the Alexander Technique (AT) as a way to manage the chronic pain I was experiencing as a professional drummer. The benefits were life-changing—not only did it help me find relief, but it also transformed how I move, play, and approach daily life. In 2024, I became certified to teach AT so I could share this powerful work with others. Since then, I’ve worked with students of all levels, helping them recognize unnecessary tension, improve ease of movement, and develop a more fluid, injury-free approach to drumming.
Keeping the Student Interested
I believe music should be both disciplined and joyful. While I encourage students to practice consistently and challenge themselves, I also make sure lessons stay connected to what excites them musically. By starting from each student’s interests, I help them build skills that expand their creativity and confidence. The balance between focused practice and the freedom to simply play makes learning both nurturing and inspiring. Music is a privilege to play—and with practice and a focused mindset comes the freedom and ease to truly express yourself.
